Oslo is the capital as well as the largest city in Norway. The Oslo agglomeration brings together over a quarter of the entire population of Norway, and the city itself is the country’s most important economic, scientific, administrative and cultural center. It is an important node in road, rail, sea and air communication. It has been estimated that about 26% of Oslo’s indigenous people are immigrants. The number of inhabitants is currently increasing at a record pace of over 2% per year, making it one of the fastest growing cities in Europe. The city is located in the south-east of the country, on the Oslofjorden Bay.

  • Kon-Tiki Museum – the museum presents exhibits related to the expeditions of Thor Heyerdahl, the famous Kon-Tiki raft.
  • Munch Museum – having the world’s largest collection of the works of this painter, which he wrote in a will to the city of Oslo.
  • Opera House – presenting the qualities of contemporary architecture, the largest cultural facility that has been created in Norway for 700 years. Its construction cost was planned at NOK 4.4 billion.
  • Frogner Park – one of Oslo’s most popular attractions, visited annually by approximately one million tourists. A park complex with over 200 bronze and granite sculptures. Open all year (free admission).
  • Huk and Paradisbukta – recreation areas close to the city center and beaches on the Bygdoy peninsula.


The city is full of greenery, it is also located on Oslo Fjord, the longest in southern Norway. There are also 343 lakes within the city!

It is in Oslo that the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded. This happens on December 10 each year.
